Skyline Trail to the top of Hickory Nut Falls
The old Skyline Trail from Exclamation Point to the top of Hickory Nut Falls was closed in 2008 due to structural issues. Parks staff has started dismantling the old Skyline Trail and laying out a new route to the top of Hickory Nut Falls. The Friends of Chimney Rock State Park are assisting with raising funds and clearing this new section of trail. Regaining access to the top of Hickory Nut Falls is the Friends’ number one project.
Rumbling Bald Loop Trail
The old logging roads at the Rumbling Access have provided poor hiking access for years. The Friends of Chimney Rock State Park have raised funds and assisted in completing the first phase of the Rumbling Bald Loop Trail. The Friends will continue to fund and provide volunteer labor this fall as phase two completes the loop and provides ample access for both hikers and climbers.
Invasive Species Management-Goats!
Invasive species are plants that are non-native to the park and are threating the biodiversity and natural communities that we all treasure. The Friends assist Park Rangers as they cut and treat invasive plants and try and restore these natural communities.
This year the Friends are partnering with the park, Chimney Rock Management LLC, and the Weed Action Coalition of Hickory Nut Gorge (WACNG) link and using goats to assist with the removal of a 2-acre patch of Kudzu found near the top of Chimney Rock State Park.
The management board of Friends of Chimney Rock State Park is seeking individuals with any interest in supporting this friends group in the form of leadership, communications, accounting, secretarial, volunteer coordination, fund raising, grant writing, event planning, and event staffing. The board oversees planning and meets quarterly. All board members are non-paid volunteers who are dedicated to assisting with the future of this friends group and supporting Chimney Rock State Park.
Rogue Ranger Volunteer Program
Have you ever wanted to be a park ranger? The Rogue Ranger Volunteer Program is a Friends of Chimney Rock State Park-sponsored volunteer program where volunteers assist rangers with some of their most rewarding job duties. These opportunities include marking uncharted territories, bushwhacking new trails, battling invasive plants, renewing recreational opportunities, and socializing at local events!
