Friends of Chimney Rock State Park

The Friends of Chimney Rock State Park are a nonprofit organization that supports the North Carolina state park by fundraising, organizing events, and raising awareness about the natural and cultural significance of Chimney Rock State Park. Their mission is to protect and sustain the Hickory Nut Gorge area. In addition to their work with the park, they also advocate for the NC State Park system and offer educational opportunities to visitors of all ages.

Chimney Rock State Park is a place of incredible scenery and historical significance. The area was originally purchased by Lucius B. Morse and his brothers in 1902. He and his family were physicians from Missouri who had tuberculosis. They bought the 400 acres of land for $25. After years of development and almost losing their property to development, the Morse Family finally sold the property to the State of North Carolina in 2007. This year, Chimney Rock State Park is celebrating its centennial.

The Friends of Chimney Rock State Park is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They advocate for the preservation of the natural and cultural resources of Chimney Rock State Park and other North Carolina state parks. Members of the organization are always welcome to donate or volunteer. If you would like to support the organization, you can do so by joining the Friends of Chimney Rock State Park or donating to the Park’s mission.

One of the most unique features of Chimney Rock State Park is the diverse cliff face habitats. Visitors can hike the Skyline Trail, which crosses the cliffs and woodlands. It also leads to the top of the Hickory Nut Falls. However, only experienced hikers should attempt the Skyline trail. A shorter alternative is the Outcroppings trail.

Chimney Rock State Park is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2017. As part of its 100-year celebration, the Park is hosting a series of events. Some of the programs will feature wildlife encounters, storytelling, and night hiking. On Halloween, a Park in the Dark event will take place.

On Earth Day, Lowell Elementary School fourth-graders visited the Park. During their visit, they had the opportunity to see Chimney Rock, and also enjoyed three other programs. For example, they met the Park’s animal ambassadors and learned about local wildlife. Also, they saw a presentation on Earth Day with Park staff and animals.

The Park also holds a spring photo contest. Visitors can enter photos from April to May. These photos will be reviewed by Park staff and judged by an expert panel. The winning entry will receive a $20 gift certificate to Old Time Photo in Chimney Rock Village. Additionally, the photographer will be named the Park’s Facebook Cover for two weeks. Guests who enter the contest will have a week to vote for their favorite image.

Another popular event at the Park is the Easter Sunrise Service. Each year, more than 1,000 people attend the service, which includes live spiritual music. Other annual events include an evening flyover, and stargazing.
